Put options are financial contracts giving the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to sell – or sell short – a specified amount of an underlying security at a specified price within a specific time period. This specified price that the buyer of the put option can sell is called the strike price. You may consider buying a put to protect the downside of a stock position you already own.
