How are funds in my local currency account protected?

Last updated: 12 August 2026

Funds in your local currency account are held in a safeguarding account with a regulated financial institution.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is a regulatory requirement designed to protect client funds. It ensures that:

  • your funds are segregated from etoro’s assets
  • your funds remain identifiable as client money
  • your funds are not available to etoro’s creditors

Are my funds protected by a depositor compensation scheme?

No. Funds held in a local currency account are not bank deposits and are therefore not covered by a depositor compensation scheme that may apply to bank accounts in your country.

What happens if etoro becomes insolvent?

In the unlikely event that etoro becomes insolvent, client funds held in safeguarded accounts would be returned to clients in accordance with relevant laws and insolvency procedures.

While safeguarding principles apply globally, the specific protections and insolvency processes depend on the etoro entity you are registered with and the applicable regulatory framework in your jurisdiction.
