How are capital gains in Switzerland calculated?
As capital gains are not taxable in Switzerland, there is no need to calculate capital gains for tax purposes. However, it is necessary to value shareholdings for wealth taxation.
If many positions are held on the same asset, bought at different prices, there are several methods for working out the cost basis (the acquisition price). In Switzerland, the ‘first in, first out’ (FIFO) method is used to determine the cost basis.
FIFO requires that the acquisition price of the first purchase that was made is used as the cost basis for the first sale of shares during the year.
To give an example of how FIFO is used to value shareholdings for wealth taxation, let's say an individual has three purchases of 10 shares and two sales of 10 shares during the year. FIFO requires that the first two purchases were consumed during the two sales and that the third purchase remains open.
For details on these methods, visit our article on cost basis.
What are the official tax forms and where can I download them?
Tax forms are specific to each Swiss canton, but follow a common general layout with a table for securities, accounts etc. in 3 categories:
- Swiss withholding tax
- Foreign withholding tax from countries with a double tax treaty
- Loans and interest on loans
