Why can't I open a short position?
Last updated: 12 August 2026
The option to open a short position does not appear in some accounts. Here are some possible reasons:
- Your experience or objectives do not align with CFD trading: Based on the answers you provided when opening your account, we do not believe that CFD trading is appropriate for you. As a result, you can not open short positions, which are exclusively CFD. If your circumstances change, CFD trading may become available or remain restricted, depending on your new situation. There are limits on the frequency with which your answers can be updated, so please ensure your answers accurately reflect your current situation.
- CFD trading is not permitted in your country of residence: All short positions are traded as CFDs, which are not permitted for some types of asset under some national laws and by the regulators governing some etoro clients’ accounts.
- The asset is ‘unborrowable’: Shorting is only possible through a broker’s or individual’s willingness to lend shares to a short-seller and then to buy them back from them once they close the position. An unborrowable stock is a stock that no one wishes to lend, and so shorting is not possible. The Short button will be greyed out for such assets on etoro.
