Why is my available cash going down?

Last updated: 12 August 2026

There are a few reasons why your available cash may go down or become negative without any action on your part.

Open the Account Activity section of your account statement to check the details of these possible deductions:

Overnight fees

Overnight fees are daily charges applicable to certain positions held overnight on etoro, such as leveraged CFD positions, positions on assets that are traded only as CFDs, and Spot-Quoted Futures positions (SQF).

The fees vary according to the value and direction (buy or short) of your position and are deducted from your available cash.

Commission and Opening/Closing Spread

On certain asset types, an amount is charged to your available balance on open and close:

Commission

  • Stocks: $1 or $2, may be charged based on your country of residence and the stock exchange.
  • Futures: Varies according to the specific contract.

Opening/Closing spread

  • CFD stocks and ETFs: Varies according to the price of the asset.
  • Crypto and CFD crypto: 1% of the value of the trade.

Dividend deductions on short positions

If you hold a short position on a stock, ETF, or index when it pays a dividend, you are obliged to pay the dividend, which is deducted from your available cash

Corporate events on short positions

In rare instances, corporate actions such as rights offerings may occur on a stock. Similar to dividends, if you hold a short position, the payment amount is deducted from the available cash.

When this happens, we send an email with information regarding the corporate action and update the stock’s page on the etoro platform.

Currency fluctuations

Funds in your main investment account are held in USD. If you have a local currency account, the balance is included in your Total Available Cash, along with the balance of your USD investment account.

By default, your holdings are displayed in USD. If you choose to view your account in a different currency, changes in the exchange rate between the currency of your holdings and the display currency will cause your available balance to fluctuate.

Changing the display currency does not mean your funds are converted. These currency fluctuations are a result of exchange rate movements only, not a change in the value of your holdings in their base currency.
