How do I open a position using my local currency account balance?

Last updated: 12 August 2026

If you hold a local currency account*, you can use its funds to open positions on:

  • stocks, ETFs, or crypto secured with the underlying assets
  • CFDs on USD-based assets and indices, commodities, and currency pairs

All trades and transactions on the etoro investment platform are executed in USD, but if you fund or close trades in assets with the same base currency, no conversion fees apply.

To open a trade using your local currency balance in the etoro AI app:

  1. Open the asset and tap Trade.
  2. Tap Available.
  3. Choose your local currency balance in GBP, EUR, DKK, or AUD.
  4. Review the estimated costs by tapping 'More Details' at the bottom of the execution screen.

You can change the default trading currency in your settings to avoid switching between your balances with every trade.

Important information

  • If you open a position on an asset whose base currency is different from your local account's, conversion fees apply.
  • If your USD portfolio value is negative, you can't trade with your local currency balance until it's at zero or higher.
  • If an order (market, limit, or out-of-hours) fails or is cancelled, the funds reserved for that order may be credited to your USD account.
  • If a Stop Loss or Take Profit is triggered, the position will be closed into the USD account, regardless of whether it was originally opened using funds from a local currency account.
  • The asset price may change before execution. If it rises, you get fewer units; if it falls, you'll receive the difference to your USD balance.

*Currently supported currencies: GBP, EUR, AUD, DKK. Additional currencies will be added as they launch.

When UK and EU clients open a position using funds from their EUR or GBP account, the funds are transferred from the local currency account entity to the relevant etoro investment entity for conversion and execution. For the UK: from etoro Money UK Ltd to etoro (UK) Ltd. For Europe: from etoro Money Malta Ltd to etoro (Europe) Ltd). For Australian users, the local currency and investment account entity is etoro AUS Capital Limited.
