How do I set leverage on a trade?

Last updated: 12 August 2026

If CFD trading is available on your account, you have the option to use leverage on your positions.

To apply leverage when opening a trade:

Choose the asset you want to trade and press the Trade button.

  1. Set your preferences for the position’s direction, amount and order type.
  2. Choose a Leverage (X1 for no leverage, X2, X5…).
  3. Review costs and exposure (hover over the info icon for a breakdown, including spread and fees).
  4. Press the Buy or Short button to open the trade.

Higher leverage can increase both potential gains and losses. It is important that you ensure the leverage you choose suits your risk tolerance.

The available leverage options vary by asset, account, and the etoro entity you’re registered with.

How leverage affects your exposure

Example (no leverage)*

You open a position with an investment of $1,000 and select X1.

This means no leverage is applied – you fund the full position using only your own funds. Your total exposure is $1,000, equal to the amount you invested.

If the asset price moves up or down by 1%, your profit or loss changes by 1% of $1,000, which is $10.

Example (X2 leverage)*

You open a CFD position with an investment of $1,000 using X2 leverage.

This means half of the position’s value is borrowed. Your total exposure is $2,000, double the amount you invested.

If the asset price moves up or down by 1%, your profit or loss changes by 1% of $2,000, which is $20.
