What is video identification?

Video identification is a method used to fulfil the legal requirement under German law for verifying etoro clients who hold real cryptocurrency. The process is carried out by a third-party provider, IDnow.

You’ll be asked to complete either video or bank identification if you open a crypto position secured with the underlying asset, copy other traders, invest in Smart Portfolios containing crypto, or use the etoro crypto wallet.

You may have to repeat the process every two years or if your ID expires.

How does video identification work?

The process requires:

• A working webcam (for desktop users) or a smartphone with a working video camera.
• A valid German ID card, passport, or residence permit to present during the call.
• The mobile phone number registered in the etoro account.

Once you’re ready, click on Start video identification. This connects you to a live person, who will compare your face to the ID photo and its details.

How long does it take?

The process itself takes four to six minutes. However, during periods of heightened interest in crypto, IDnow may experience a high volume of requests. If you cannot connect to an agent, we recommend trying again later.

Please ensure you have a stable network connection for a smoother and faster experience.

After you have finished the process, you’ll receive confirmation via email and a notification on the platform. In rare cases, it may take up to 48 hours to get the final answer.

Is my data secure?

As a processor of personal data, IDnow is subject to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and operates with secure servers and encrypted internet connections. Customer data is handled confidentially.
