What is a market order?

Last updated: 12 August 2026

A market order is an order to buy or sell an asset at the best available price. etoro accepts market orders, whether the market you wish to invest in is open or closed.

If the market is open, we will quickly fill your order at the best available market price. You will see the message 'Order filled' at the bottom of the screen. The order disappears from the Orders section of your Portfolio and the new trade is shown with the fill price received.

If the market is closed, we will execute your trade the next time the market opens at the best price available at that time. This is called an out of hours order. For less common stocks, you may only be able to enter orders during market hours. This does not affect cryptoassets because their markets are always open.
