What is an order?

Last updated: 12 August 2026

An order is an instruction an investor gives to a broker to open a buy or a short position on an asset.

When opening a buy position, you place the order by pressing Buy. If CFD trading is available on your account, you have the option to set an order to open a short position by pressing Short.

As soon as you click Buy or Short to place an order:

  • We create an order to execute your trade. We will then do our best to fill your order. During market hours, or if the asset is available for trading outside regular hours, this is usually instant.
  • A pending order can be found in the ‘Orders’ section of your Portfolio.
  • The cash amount allocated to the order is no longer available for trading. You can cancel a pending order at any time to return the funds to your available balance.

In the etoro AI app, pending orders have their own screen. In your Portfolio, tap the three dots at the top right corner, then select Pending orders from the list.

We do not guarantee that your order will be executed, as prices in the market may be skipped during periods of extreme volatility.
