What is crypto?

Crypto is short for cryptoasset or cryptocurrency. A crypto is a digital asset that uses cryptography (computer code) to secure transactions, control the creation of new units, and prove ownership. Unlike traditional currencies, crypto can be exchanged without a central authority, such as a government or bank.
Transactions with crypto are recorded on a digital ledger called a blockchain, which acts as a virtual accounting system. This makes transactions secure and allows people to buy, sell, or trade crypto directly with each other. Popular cryptoassets include Bitcoin and Ethereum.
