What is staking?
Last updated: 12 August 2026
Staking is a way to earn rewards by holding certain types of cryptoassets.
It’s based on a blockchain mechanism called Proof of Stake (PoS). In a PoS network, new blocks are validated – and transactions are confirmed – by participants who ‘stake’ their crypto. The more crypto a participant stakes, the greater their chances of being selected to validate the next block.
At etoro, we stake supported cryptoassets on behalf of our clients. In return, staking rewards are shared between etoro and eligible clients who hold those assets. By staking with etoro, clients help support the blockchain network without needing to take any action themselves.
Rewards are shared in the same cryptoasset that was staked and automatically distributed to your portfolio; for example, the rewards for staking ADA are given in ADA.
Staking is only available for supported cryptoassets. Terms and Conditions apply.
