Why did my short position's stop loss trigger but the closing price isn’t shown on the chart?
Last updated: 12 August 2026
If your stop loss on a short position was triggered but you don’t see the closing price on the chart, it may be due to the difference between bid and ask prices (the spread).
On etoro, charts display the bid (sell) price.
For short positions, stop losses trigger at the ask (buy) price, which is always higher than the bid price. If the ask price reaches your stop loss level but the bid price does not, the chart’s line won’t appear to have crossed the stop loss.
Spreads can widen during times of high volatility and low liquidity, or at market open/close. A wider spread increases the likelihood of such events.
Below is a visual example of a short trade triggering the stop loss.
- The dashed line represents the stop loss.
- The white line represents the bid price, which is displayed on the trading chart.
- The red line represents the ask price, which is not displayed on the chart.
In the example, the ask price reaches the stop loss rate, closing the position, while the bid price is still below the stop loss rate.
You can check the exact execution price of your closed position details in your portfolio history.
