The details of a payee don’t match – can I still send money?
Last updated: 12 August 2026
You can still send money out of your local currency account if the payee’s name and account details do not match, but proceed only if you are confident the details are correct. Continuing without a confirmed match increases the risk of sending funds to the wrong account, and those funds may not be recoverable.
Why do we ask you to confirm the payee details?
When you add a new payee, we automatically cross-check the information you enter with the recipient’s bank to help ensure you’re sending money to the right place.
This service is known as Confirmation of Payee (CoP) in the UK and Verification of Payee (VoP) in Europe. It is commonly used by banks and payment providers to protect against fraud, including authorised push payment (APP) scams.
Before sending the payment, we will show you whether the details match or not, or if we’re unable to check them.
What should I do if the details don’t match?
A mismatch does not always mean something is wrong, but you should take extra care before proceeding:
- Make sure you know and trust the payee.
- Check the account details with the payee (first and last name and IBAN or account number and sort code).
- Make sure there are no spelling differences or missing details.
- Proceed only if you are confident the details are correct. Payments sent to the wrong account may not be recoverable.
If the check doesn’t complete after several attempts, please wait 10 minutes and try again.
